Depending on whom you ask, Cumberland Avenue is either a boring but necessary Knoxville commuter corridor; or it’s the artery through which pulse the spirit, energy and heritage of the University of Tennessee. Either way, the specific ten-block section known as “The Strip” has significant unrealized potential. Working with Glatting Jackson, KCRW was responsible for gathering public input (which was impassioned at times) and providing urban design for a new mixed-use, multi-modal urban corridor. The city has named a project director and located state transportation funds for the project. Construction will begin in 2009.
