Kingsport is one of the most interesting cities in Tennessee. This Appalachian foothills city of 44,000 is home to Eastman Corp, the largest chemical plant on one site in the U.S. and it’s also home to an unprecedented array of early Tennessee historic sites. The city hired us in 2006 to create a master plan for reconnecting its revitalizing downtown to its under-appreciated Holston River waterfront. We fell in love with the place and the people we worked with. Public meetings were packed with young and old who chiefly wanted to create meaningful, authentic places along their river. Before we even finished the plan, Kingsport officials were putting measures into place to make sure the plan stays OFF the shelf and starts to happen right away. BTW….you have to go to the Riverfront Restaurant with views upriver from Long Island of the Holston. The food is great and they have paper tablecloths just right for sketching plans!
