This small west Georgia town had a great downtown plan, the centerpiece of which was brand new multiplex cinema. After the plan was adopted, the cinema operators decided they wanted the theater relocated, causing an interesting domino effect that required re-visiting the plan and re-establishing some civic priorities. The Fuller E. Callaway foundation asked us to get involved. We worked with city government, the foundation, the downtown organization and others to do just that, and we threw in some design guidance on the new theater as well. To LaGrange’s undying credit, they are determined to retain the sense and scale of their town center in the face of Atlanta’s southeastward sprawl. Stand in the town square and you will understand how they’ve done it.
