KCRW was hired to lead the formative planning for a unique public/private entity that would bring together academic departments of the University of Memphis, the City of Memphis, area neighborhoods and the local development community to ensure the proper redevelopment of the university district and to create redevelopment models for the rest of Memphis and other cities. Funded by a private donation to the University Foundation, the fellowship is also intended to result in the establishment of a Master of Architecture program and a certificate in City Building for graduate students in architecture, real estate, or city and regional planning.
